AB Mountain and Beautiful Blueberries!
Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 11:36PM My sister and I were really looking forward to spending time together this weekend. We are on the same crew, and almost always are off together at the same time. But, with all the poor weather we have had lately, things have been switching around lately. I was lucky to get off the glacier early this morning on a crew flight, and Rachel was to fly down later in the day space available, which basically means when there is room on a helicopter with the tourists. But, the day was canceled early on the glacier, and then Rachel ended up stuck up there. It has been over a week since she has been down, and I am sure she is really looking forward to a shower and communicating with the world again. It is totally a bummer that she is up there, but that is SE Alaska for you. We have had such an awesome time together this summer, and really look forward to spending time down. I hope she gets down tomorrow, and we can get out and enjoy it together. :) We are both really looking forward to next weekend, one of our favorite bands from Minnesota, Trampled By Turtles, is playing at the SE Alaska State Fair!!! We are going to take the Ferry over to Haines when we get off work next weekend, and enjoy the Fair, the music, camping, and checking out their knitting shop!
While it was a bummer Rae was on the glacier today, it was still an awesome day. One of the handlers from AIE, Dahn, and two of the Physican Assistant interns in town, Kristen and Lauren, and I all went out for a hike up AB mountain. AB Mountain is at 4200 ft, which is the same elevation as the glacier, and is about a 10 mile round trip hike. It is a pretty easy hike though, compared to Upper Dewey, as it is pretty gradual. A little ways into the hike, Lauren realized she dropped her camera (she found it later!) so Kristen, Dahn, and I spend the day enjoying the hike, the views, and hours picking and eating blueberries. We are planning on making jam sometime soon. Here are some pictures from today, it was amazing! (ok, the internet is being soooooo slow! pictures, and updated journal entry with more detail to come tomorrow morning :) )
We ate dinner of corn tortillas, cracked black pepper turkey, cheese, apples, nutella, and blueberries at the false peak (above), as clouds were rolling in and covering up the top peak (below)
blueberries and salmonberries
our blueberry vessels.... we didn't have water bottles, and scrounged around the trailer and this is what we found: canada dry tonic water bottle, aquafina water bottle, smirnoff vodka water bottle and plastic bag!
